Club call

There was very little action on the playing field this week due to the Bank Holiday weekend.

It was left to the first and second teams to provide us with football. Our first team suffered their fourth successive defeat when they lost at home to Templeogue United by two goals to one.

The first half saw them control the game for long periods and go in at the break with a deserved 1-0 lead. The second period was totally different with the only chance of note to the lads coming in the last minute with the away keeper saving well from Paul O'Neill but by this stage the lads had shot themselves in the foot.

At 1-0 up midway through the half, the lack of discipline reared its head again with Rovers having a player dismissed for something that was said to the referee, the away side responded by scoring two goals in the space of a couple of minutes with 15 minutes remaining.

Paul Alexander and Ricki Quinn were Rovers best players on the day in an over worked defence especially in the second half when Rovers surrendered control in the middle of the park.

This result sees them drop to fourth from the bottom of the league but with very little separating all the teams in this league a couple of wins could propel them up the table.

The seconds were away on Saturday, they took on Rathcoole Boys who were two places and two points behind Rovers in the league, so to come away with a share of the spoils was an excellent result, Mark Delaney scored the all important goal to gain a valuable point to keep them in touch with the leaders.

This result leaves them in third place two points behind joint leaders Greystones Utd and Killester Utd.

Congratulations to our U-13A and 16A teams on qualifying for their Premier Shield finals, well done lads.

Jimmy, Brian and the U-16A team would like to thank Jason and St Anthony's for coming down to Wicklow to play a friendly last Saturday morning; it was much appreciated, thanks again.

Our Saturday morning soccer academy will resume this Saturday the 3rd of November on the all weather pitch at 11am, so all you kids from three years of age up to eight years come along and enjoy the game of soccer under the guidance of Johnny Dunne.

The club are seeking players for U-8s (born 2005/2006), U-9s9 (born 2004) and U-11s (born 2002), if you have a child at any of these age groups and are interested in playing please contact John Frazer at 087-0564394.

Also our U-14B team are currently seeking a couple of players, if you were born in 1999 and are interested in playing soccer please contact Rob O'Neill at 085-2402796.

It has been noted that some managers are not texting full information to our club secretaries, the text should contain both team names, whether A, B or C, age group, competition and goal scorers.

Also text should be sent asap after the end of the match and should be sent whether you win or lose.

Please think of the people who are giving up their time to send results and goal scorers to the league and newspaper, everything has a knock on effect by the delay to send your result in. This applies to the Senior teams as well as the Junior sides.

Club gear is available from our club shop, if anyone wishes to purchase club gear you can contact Franny Copeland at 087 2230063 or email him at

The following is a list of the gear and prices: socks - Junior €5, Senior €8; Shorts with crest - Junior €10, Senior €12; tracksuit - Junior €45, Senior €57; polo shirts - Junior €22, Senior €28; rain jacket - Junior €30, Senior €37; hoodie - Junior €20, Senior €26. The big news for the Club this week was the inclusion of a host of Arklow Town FC players in the final selection for the U-11, U-12 and U-13 Wicklow County squads. Congratulations to all the boys. We're very proud of them all.

With the Halloween Bank Holiday weekend in full swing, for once it was a relatively quiet weekend with only three competitive games being played.

On Friday night our WDFL Premier team welcomed BBK United to Lamberton in the Andy McEvoy Premier Division in a game which ended in a 2-2 draw with Peter Walker and Willie Kavanagh on target for The Town.

On Saturday morning our U-17 boys had home advantage over Ashford Rovers and in a tough encounter goals from Darren Dempsey and Mikey Kennedy secured a 2-0 victory.

The LSL team were not as fortunate when they travelled to face Firhouse/Clover FC in Tallaght. Despite playing some fantastic football for long periods of the game they came away at the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline.

A number of friendly games also took place over the weekend with visiting teams including Northend United, Courtown Hibs and Aughrim Rangers.

Arklow Town FC would like to congratulate Jack Watson on his selection for the Leinster Youths Squad which participated in the FAI U-17 Inter-Provincial Tournament in Wexford last weekend.

And finally, another hugely successful event for the children of the Club saw a tremendous turn out for the Halloween Fancy Dress Disco on Friday night. The kids looked fantastic in their costumes. Several other activities are planned over the coming weeks and we'll bring you news as soon as it is available. You can keep you to date via The Town - Arklow Town FC facebook page.
