WICKLOW'S seconds were unlucky to lose out on a place in the south east final after a hard fought encounter against a physical Tullow side at Ashtown Lane on Sunday.
WICKLOW 8 TULLOW 12
This south east playoff game took place in horrendous conditions with heavy rain and a wind that strengthened to favour Tullow in the second half.
Wicklow opened the scoring with a penalty from Ben Armstrong. The powerful Tullow pack were relishing the conditions and the visitors scored two tries once of which was converted to lead 12-3.
Wicklow fought back well and 15 minutes into the second half scored a fantastic team try through Stephen Roberts who drove over to score after fantastic work by both backs and forwards. The conversion was missed but Wicklow were right back in the game at 8-12 with over 20 minutes left on the clock.
As the game wore on the conditions worsened. The wind picked up and gave Tullow a huge advantage that wasn't there for Wicklow in the first half. Wicklow were dominating in terms of possession but Tullow defended well and Wicklow found it almost impossible to get into Tullow territory.
When they did get into scoring range they were often undone by the conditions, with the greasy ball proving problematic for both sides.
Wicklow battled hard but were unable to come up with the winning score. On the day the conditions suited the bigger Tullow side when a dry day might have suited a more mobile Wicklow side more.
Wicklow will get a chance to go head to head with Tullow next weekend when they travel to Black Gates to take on the same side in the Leinster league. Tullow lead the league but Wicklow will have no fear of this side and will travel looking for the win.
