Rathnew and Newtown United squeeze through to next round of Wicklow Cup

Published 09/01/2013 | 10:05

RATHNEW AND Newtown United A lived to tell the tale of their second round Wicklow Cup clashes at the weekend.

Both clubs have lifted the trophy in recent seasons and they remain on course to repeat the trick in May following narrow victories.

Newtown United faced the sizeable task of taking on Ashford Rovers and they were made to work extremely hard to secure their place in the third round, eventually sealing a 3-4 win. Dean Odlum struck a brace for the Magpies, with Cathal McNicholas and John Heffernan both registering singles.

United will probably be hoping to avoid the Villagers until the latter stages.

Rathnew set up a possible future rendezvous following their 2-1 win over St. Fergal's AFC at Shamrock Park.
