Wicklow U-12s travelled to Barnhall RFC on Sunday last to play a friendly match.
A real treat was in store for the Wicklow lads when they realised that the referee on the day was to be none other than International referee Nigel Owens who was a guest of Barnhall RFC.
Nigel Owens is recognised as one of the best referees in the world and the day before had taken charge of the Ireland Italy clash in the Aviva Stadium.
He had been a guest speaker at Barnhall RFC on Thursday night and came back on Sunday to referee the Barnhall v Wicklow game.
The Wicklow players and coaches were delighted as he chatted to all after the game and happily posed for photos with anyone who wanted him to do so.
Coached by head coach, Alan Long, Andrew Flood, Shane McDonald, Ronan Traynor and Yuri Shevchenko, the Wicklow under-12s are preparing for the WRFC annual under-12 tour to Munster in April when they will stay in Trabolgan while playing two games against some of the strongest sides in the province.
This is always a fantastic trip and marks the end of their years playing mini rugby and their graduation to the 15 aside game from under-13 onwards.
