Big news for Arklow
Planning permission for gym extension
ARKLOW BOXING CLUB officials were delighted that Olympians Katie Taylor and Adam Nolan, their coach Pete Taylor and other Bray boxers joined them for a training session in Arklow Boxing Club gymnasium on Monday last.
On arrival Katie, Pete and Adam posed for photos and signed autographs for the club members who were joined for the occasion by their parents on the special night.
A presentation was then made to Katie and Adam by club Senior Coach Jim Moore and new club secretary Linda Morgan.
Afterwards Pete directed a training session which included a selection of Arklow boxers taken from each age group from Boy 1 to Senior.
After training more photos and autographs followed with the Bray team in no hurry to leave, with every boy and girl getting that important photo or signature to hang on their wall and be able to brag they were in Arklow Boxing Club on the night when Olympic Gold medallist Katie visited.
Katie, Pete and Adam intend to visit all the boxing clubs in Wicklow for training sessions over the season with Arklow being the first.
In other news Arklow Boxing club are hoping they are successful when in the near future the Capital Sports Programme Grants (lotto grants) are announced.
Arklow have been granted full planning permission by Arklow Town Council and seriously need to extend their gymnasium as since September their membership has trebled due to the success of the Irish Olympic team and for the first time in the clubs history have had to curtail membership and can only take a list of applicants who can join when room becomes available
In the meantime Arklow's Elaine Harrison is through to the final of the Irish Intermediate championships. Elaine who boxes at 57K awaits the result of the semi-final between Niamh Ball of the Trojan BC and Stephanie Quaile of Drimnagh BC.
Because of the huge entry in the Intermediates Elaine's final will not take place until December 14.
