Baltinglass Golf Club

Limerick native Michael Browne playing off 14 produced the round of the weekend with a marvellous score of 66 net in the Autumn Medal sponsored by Colm and Olivia Cooney.

Amidst all the banter between his playing partners Michael played very steady golf over the 18 holes, grossing two 40's for the two nines. Michael had 0.5 net to spare on the back 9 over 19 handicapper Chris Murphy, who also had a 66 net.

Captain's Prize winner Tom Byrne continued his rich vain of form to win the gross shooting a 73, also giving him valuable GOY points. This competition was the concluding singles for the Golfer of the Year.

Results - 1st: Michael Browne (14) 66; 2nd: Chris Murphy (19) 66; Gross: Tom Byrne (4) 73; 3rd: Brian Archbold (20) 68

The Failte Cup Mixed foursomes also took place on Sunday afternoon. This competition has been played in the club since 1954, originally as a match play format, but in recent years has been relaunched as a stable ford competition, played on one day, with a shotgun start.

This has proven to be a very sociable and successful format. Congratulations to the Lady President Bernie Kilcoyne and her husband Bryan who had a score of 38pts, just pipping the Captain Brendan Doogue and his wife Teresa on the back 9.

Indeed Bryan's father Jack won the competition in its inaugural year, partnering Bryan's aunt Angela Cullen. Bryan's late brother John also won the 'Failte' playing with Angela Doyle in 1969.

The Club Finals in the match play competitions will take place next Saturday. First off at 12.30pm will be the Scotch foursomes match between Gardai, Brian Slattery and Brian Foley and the father and son combination of Mick and Stephen Murphy.

The Four ball match will tee off at 12.40pm and this is between the bearded pairing of Brian Brennan and Tom Flynn against former football greats, Raymond 'Rocky' Danne and Paudge Doody.

The Sat Sun Cup final also takes place at 1pm. The Sat Sun Cup was donated to our club by one of our longstanding and most esteemed members, Larry Byrne.

In proposing this competition, Larry suggested the winners from the four different categories on three Saturdays, and three Sundays, from our three qualifying weekends, go forward to play in a Ryder Cup style competition.

Last year was the first year the competition was played, everyone who played really enjoyed the format. Each team consists of 12 players. The format for the competition will be Singles, Scotch Foursomes and Four ball.

The match shall be played over 18 holes match play, the full round must be played, the aggregate holes up to decide the winning team. The presentation of the Sat Sun Cup will be made immediately after the match in the Clubhouse by our Captain Brendan Doogue.

Next weekend there will be an 18 holes Singles Stable ford generously sponsored by PJ O'Reilly, Londis Food store. For time sheet log onto website and click on to members booking or alternatively contact the office on 0596481350.
