Wicklow beaten but not bowed
Wicklow mustn't stray from the drawing board for the foreseeable future if Sunday's evidence is anything to go by.
The extremely young squad trailed Longford 0-1 to 6-9 at half time of this fixture in Newtown and at that stage there were no straws left to clutch at. But, when most sides would have crumbled further, Wicklow gritted their teeth and went back out in the second half and shaded the second 30 minutes.
The Wicklow women didn't look like a side in disarray and bereft of confidence as they all noisily arrived at the ground with their car horns taking a battering as they announced their arrival.
With two minutes gone in the tie at a windswept Newtown, the sides were level on a point apiece after Wicklow's Laura Ahern had cancelled out Michelle Farrell's opener.
Twenty eight tortured minutes later though Ahern and co. must have been longing to return to the comfort of their cars after watching their visitors running in six goals and eight points unanswered.
Wicklow's dressing room wouldn't have been a barrel of laughs at half time but whatever happened in there did manage to cause a stirring, as the hosts pulled two points back inside the first five minutes after the restart.
Full-forward Lucy Mulhall went on something of a one-woman salvage operation as she knocked four points over the crossbar but it was never going to have any real impact on the scoreline and Longford sauntered through the closing stages to record a 0-7 6-11 thrashing of the Garden County.
Wicklow Scorers: Lucy Mulhall 0-4, Laura Ahern 0-1, Amy Murphy 0-1, A.N. Other 0-1.
