Rathnew triumph over game Eire Og

The final round of the north east league saw Rathnew and Eire Og Greystones do battle at Merrymeeting on Thursday evening last.

The men from the thatched village needed a win to clinch the title and they did that in true Rathnew fashion as they scored a five point victory to be crowned worthy champions and in doing so completed the league campaign undefeated.

Eire Og proved worthy opposition and they made the home side work hard through out the game which saw the winners leading on a score of 1-05 to 1-03 at the break.

Rathnew jumped into a early lead with a point each from wing back Dylan Franey and impressive Jordan Graham and they should have three goals during the opening 10 minutes which saw they hit the post twice and also their forward line squandered many scoring chances before veteran Johnny Barry opened the Eire Og with a point from a free.

Which brought a quick response which saw Erick Doyle score a point which saw the winners leading on a score of 0-03 to 0-01 at the end of the first quarter.

The rest of the half saw a keenly contested game with both sides focused on the task that lay ahead the north Wicklow side were given a life line after a movement involving several players which saw full forward Anto Byrne crash to the net for the opening goal. Once again Rathnew responded with saw Erick Doyle score his second point which saw the sides for the second time on a score of 0-04 to 1-01.

At this stage Eire Og took the game to the pre match favourites which resulted in Johnny Barry kicking two points from frees which gave his side the lead which proved to their last score of the half as Rathnew took control in most sectors of the field.

This dominance resulted in a goal from Robert Byrne and a point from Markie O'Connor which saw the winners leading on a score of 1-05 to 1-03 at half time.

The second half saw Rathnew out of the traps early and hit a golden spell which saw them score 2-01 in the opening 10 minutes with a goal from a Robert Doyle penalty and the same player added a point from a free and after movement started at midfield Jordan Graham found the net while Erick Doyle added his third point which gave the winners a commanding lead of 3-07 to 1-03 at the end of third quarter.

With victory in sight the home side probably felt they had done enough which resulted in a Greystones rally which saw they score five points in a row through top marks man Johnny Barry 0-04, all frees, and Gavin Morris, one from play, which the winners replied with a point from Jordan Graham, one last effort saw substitute Daniel English close the scoring with a long range point which left Rathnew worthy winners in better all round team performance.

After the game Mick Hagan presented the cup to winning captain Lesley Martin and in doing so congratulated both teams and mentors for their efforts during the league campaign and wished they well in their respective championships
