Balinacor and Ashford, who both made a bad start to this Darcy Sand Intermediate Football Championship campaign, made the journey to Merrymeeting hoping to collect their first points in the campaign and after a keenly contested game the Glenmalure men scored their first win.

There was added spice to the occasion which saw two prominent An Tochar club men, Brendan Swords and Shay Cullen, parade the side lines as managers and in the end it was Shay Cullen who won the bragging rights after his side's convincing victory.

Balinacor entered the game needing a win to keep their championship hopes alive and this desire saw the winners lay the foundation for success after a whirlwind start with a opening goal after five minutes thanks to a David Carter fist to the net.

Despite playing against the a strong breeze last year's defeated finalists played some delightful football by using the open spaces as they added single points from midfielder Paddy Byrne from a free and Callum Rowden who was making a welcome return to the playing fields, before Brian Shannon opened Ashford scoring with a point from play which saw the winners leading 1-02 to 0-01 after 10 minutes.

Ballinacor continued to keep the pressure on as they dominated throughout the field and were rewarded with six points in a row through top marksman Paddy Byrne, four frees and singles from Conor Parsons and wing forward Denis Hefferan which gave the winners a commanding lead of 1-08 to 0-01 after 24 minutes.

After both sides squandered scoring chances, Ashford suffered a second killer blow when a long ball from midfield saw David Carter score his second goal, a brief rally by the black and amber men saw dual player Aaron Nugent score two points one from a free.

A quick response from Balinacor saw them surge up field once again which resulted in a penalty being awarded but Paddy Byrne's shot produced a brilliant save from goal keeper William Hender Phillips which left the half time score 2-08 to 0-03.

After the break Graham Mooney pointed a free to reduce the deficit, but not for the time in the game Ballinacor lifted their game and with no pressure on them they scored three points in a row from Callum Rowden, Conor Parsons, and a Paddy Byrne free, while substitute Jay Taylor responded with a point which proved to be Ashford's last score which left the score line reading 2-11 to 0-05 at the end of the third quarter.

The remainder of the game saw the winners score five more points from a impressive full forward line who caused havoc in the Ashford defence through out entire game which saw Callum Rowden kick three while Conor Parsons completed the scoring with two late points which saw Balinacor run out convincing winners in a good all round team performance.

But manager Shay Cullen is aware that much stiffer opposition lies ahead as they face Shillelagh and Aughrim in their remaining games.

While Ashford will have to show vast improvement if they are to avoid being in a relegation play-off.

Scorers for Ballinacor: David Carter 2-00, Paddy Byrne 0-05 (5f), Callum Rowden 0-05 (1f), Conor Parsons 0-04, Denis Heffernan 0-01.

Scorers for Ashford: Aaron Nugent 0-02 (1f), Brian Shannon 0-01, Graham Mooney 0-01 (1f), Jay Taylor 0-01.
