Baltinglass off to a flier in the league
The Baltinglass Intermediate team got off to a good start in the new season SFL with a home win over Ballinacor at Baltinglass on Saturday
For the most part this was a close and hard fought match with patched of good football. The shooting was something else; it was very much first day of season stuff with both sides missing enough easy shots at goal to win any matches.
Baltinglass, with the wind behind them dominated the first quarter, Brian Lord got them off to a flying start with a goal and they put 1-3 on the score board without replay.
Ronan Phelan got Ballinacor's first point in the 20th minute and when Christy Murphy put Brian Hanlon through for a goal the Glen men were right back in contention.
Both scoring machines went on the blink in the closing minutes of the half and the score remained at 1-3 to 1-1 in favour of Baltinglass at the break.
It appeared at that stage that Ballinacor, with the wind behind then and playing into the scoring Road goal had two points for the taking. However an excellent goal by Willie Kavanagh changed all that and put Balto back in the driving seat.
Ballinacor fought back, got the deficit down to a single point and had plenty of chanced to close the gap but failed to do so.
New manager Jim (Butch) Darcy was pleased enough with the performance of the men from the glen but he will certainly be doing a lot of shooting practice as soon as he can get back into the now flooded pitch.
Tommy Murphy is in charge of the Baltinglass outfit again but his problem could keeping Deno and company from raiding his nest.
