A WICKLOW woman opted to carry out 120 hours of Community Service instead of a six month spell in prison, after she was convicted at Gorey District Court of driving without insurance.
The court heard that Carol Knowles (29) of 11 High Street, Wicklow, had 97 previous convictions. She had already been in court charged with driving without insurance or a licence, and driving while disqualified at Eire Street, Gorey, on June 22, 2011. A Probation Report was handed to Judge Gerard Haughton.
Solicitor David Tarrant said his client was currently banned from driving for 14 years. 'She never wants to drive again,' he said, adding that since her relationship broke up, she's 'on the straight and narrow.'
Judge Haughton struck out the charge of driving while disqualified, but banned her from driving for 15 years on the no insurance charge. He also sentenced her to six months in prison, and gave her the option of carrying out 120 hours' Community Service instead.She chose to do the Community Service, and the case was adjourned to January 10 next to allow a Community Service suitability report to be prepared.
