Slaughter Hill road 'highly dangerous'
THE road leading from Newtownmountkennedy to Roundwood known as Slaughter Hill has been described as an 'accident waiting to happen.'
Both Cllr. Shay Cullen and Cllr. Daire Nolan described the road as 'highly dangerous' and called for traffic calming measures at July's monthly meeting of the Wicklow Municipal District.
'There have been numerous traffic accidents on Slaughter Hill and urgent traffic calming measures are required to slow the traffic down. If two lorries meet in parts of the road then it is impossible for them to pass. There are also no road markings. It's a death trap,' said Cllr. Cullen.
Cllr. Nolan said he was 'nearly put into a hedge' when recently travelling on the road.
'Hedges growing along the side of the road make it difficult to access and difficult to see when you are driving,' said Cllr. Nolan.
He also called for additional lighting along the R772 road in Newtownmountkennedy.
'There is lighting on a section but then it stops at the worst part of the road where there have been numerous near misses regarding serious accidents.'
Area Engineer Paul Byrne acknowledged that he had received lots of emails from residents regarding Slaughter Hill. 'It could be argued that the problem is driver behaviour with people speeding down there. I will look into signage and white lines, though I don't know if that will work because the road is so narrow.'
