THE National Sea Life Aquarium in Bray has called on the Government to protect native Irish basking sharks.
Sea Life launched an online petition during Shark Week to help protect 'a misunderstood species'.
Sea Life celebrated Shark Week with a series of events, exhibitions and activities and as part of its education and conservation programme.
It is calling on the government to protect our native basking shark population in the same way the sharks are protected in UK territorial waters.
Pat Ó Súilleabháin, Centre Director at SEA LIFE said 'sharks have suffered an unwarranted reputation as being the ' terrorists of the sea'.
We are running a programme of activities which will help dispel these myths
