One rate causes concern

CONSOLIDATING rates across the county caused concern at last week's AGM of the Baltinglass Municipal District.
The members were told that over the coming ten years the rates across the county will have to be adjusted to just one county rate rather than rates for individual towns.
Cllr. Vincent Blake said he was worried about the effect this would have on small businesses who were already struggling to survive.
'People in the rural areas are paying a much higher rate than the urban areas', he said. Cllr. Jim Ruttle said that small and medium businesses were being crucified by rates.
He said it was one thing for the council to strike a rate but said if in doing so they were closing businesses it was at cross purposes.
