Nine vehicles seized in garda operation

Thirty-two garda checkpoints were set up throughout County Wicklow over the weekend as part of Operation Thor across the district.

The two-day operation was carried out by gardaí from the Eastern Region. It began on Friday morning and concluded at 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Uniformed gardaí and detectives from Wicklow District, supported by Divisional Traffic Units, Regional Support Unit and the Garda Air Support Unit were involved in the operation.

A large number of traffic and crime checkpoints were conducted at key routes as well as high visibility patrols in urban areas; searches of premises for drugs and proceeds of crime and the execution of warrants and inspection of licensed premises.

During the course of the weekend four arrest warrants were executed including a European arrest warrant for one man with two people taken to prison. A total of nine vehicles were detained under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.

One checkpoint in particular was set up in the remote Wicklow uplands to draw attention to thefts from cars, a crime which has become prevalent in isolated areas of the county.
