A 'POSITIVE PASTIMES'' photography competition for young people was run in conjunction with the drug awareness week. Organised by Wicklow Travellers Group and East Wicklow Youth Services, students from Wicklow's secondary schools and youthreach were invited to take a photo of an activity that occupies their spare time and offers an alternative to drinking or taking drugs.
First prize in the competition was an Iphone 4s, with the two runners up receiving one4all vouchers.
The standard of photographs was particularly high amongst the 58 entries that were received.
The reasons the young people gave for taking the photographs that accompanied the entries also caught the judges' attention.
First prize, of an Iphone 4s went to a photo, 'Dog's View'" by Georgia Collard, Dominican College.
Describing the inspiration behind the photograph, she said, ' when I walk my dog it helps clear my head.
It helps me forget about the world around me, from the consent judging or consciousness that surrounds me in my teenage life.
This is a more effective way of ' leaving the world' as it doesn't just clear my head for that short period of time but for a much longer period.
Second prize, a €100 one4all voucher, went to 'Piano' by Jane Fagan of the Dominican and third prize, a €50 one4all voucher, was awarded to 'Jake - Air' by Patrick Owens of East Glendalough.
'Jake - Air' by Patrick Owens, of East Glendalough (avove) and right, 'Dog's View' by Georgia Collard, Dominican College.
