WICKLOW FIREFIGHTERS battled a blaze for three hours on Tuesday evening after a fire broke out in a waste metal plant just outside Wicklow town.
The fire took hold just after 7 p.m. at Multimetals Recycling Ltd, located along the well known scenic spot ' The Murrough'.
Staff had already left work for the evening when the fire first started. While the exact cause of the blaze is still being investigated, it is believed it began in a tyre shredding machine.
Two fire units from Wicklow town quickly arrived on the scene and managed to contain the flames so they didn't spread to other properties on the site. They continued battling back the fire until 10 p.m..
'It was an awkward fire to put out because all the tyres are made from rubber. Thankfully, Multimetals have everything on site separated so we were able to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading elsewhere,' said a Fire Services spokesperson.
Multimetals specialise in recycling old or new scrap metal from farmers, mechanical and engineering businesses, demolition and factory clear outs or from individual customers.
