More than €1 million worth of cannabis was found in Newtownmountkennedy at the weekend during a major drugs swoop by gardai from the National Drugs Unit, following several days of surveillance

Gardai from the Drugs Unit, which is based in Dublin Castle, made the swoop on Friday afternoon as part of an ongoing operation in tackling the sale and supply of drugs.

They searched two homes in two different areas of Newtownmountkennedy and a total of 51kg of cannabis herb was found in total.

The drugs were immediately brought to Garda Headquarters for analysis have an estimated street value of €1.02 million.

Two men, one aged 36 years and one aged 61 years, were arrested at the scene and brought to Bray Garda Station where they were questioned at length by gardai. One of them is due to appear in court tomorrow (Thursday).

A garda spokesperson said 'drug seizures play a critical role in targeting the livelihood of criminals and reducing their ability to carry out illegal activities. Drug seizures also help protect communities from the devastating impact of drugs and the associated criminality.'
