FIONNUALA BRITTON of Brittas Bay has become the first ever athlete to retain the coveted European Cross Country Women's title.
The 28 year old held on to her title after a dramatic finish saw her retain her crown by jus two seconds in freezing temperatures in Budapest, Hungary.
She also helped Ireland to land the team Gold, edging out France into second position on a countback.
Speaking after becoming champion for a second time, Fionnuala described Sunday as 'a perfect day.'
'We've been talking about a team medal since September because half of us were on the team that finished fourth in 2009. We thought we might get silver or bronze, we didn't ever really believe we could ever win gold so that has just made this even more special.'
Last year Fionnuala romped home to victory in Slovenia.
