UP to 60 marina berths are expected to be open in time for the 2013 sailing season.

Speaking at last week's meeting of Grerystones Town Council Director of Services with Wicklow County Council Sean Quirke said 'Sispar is currently at an advanced stage of discussions with a marina operator with the intention of commencing a marina facility of 50- 60 berths for the 2013 sailing season.'

Cllr. Grainne McLoughlin said she would like to see some works taking place in the harbour area because,

'I think it looks horrible at the moment but it will be a fabulous tourist facility.'

Cllr. Derek Mitchell said he was 'delighted there have been discussions with a marina operator.

'I think we need to boost tourism in the town.

'A lot of work has been done to get the marina open and it will be an excellent facility.'

Cllr. Ciaran Hayden said he hoped that the 10 per cent visitor's berths were included in the provision.

Cllr. Kathleen Kelleher said:

'I think it's excellent news. A 24 hour accessible harbour will be a major boost for the town. I know there has been set backs and it hasn't gone according to plan.

' This is a marine country and we have never developed our marine industry the way we have agriculture.

'Farmers get all the kudos and grants', she said.
