FIGURES RELEASED this week from the Department of Social Protection have revealed that a total of 11,922 people are currently unemployed in Co Wicklow.
The figure sees a drop from last year's recorded number of 12,480 but it is believed that this does not represent a positive change for the county's jobseekers as the drop is mainly attributed to the hoards of people who have emigrated in the past 12 months.
In the decade from 2002 to 2011 unemployment rose by 187.4 per cent in the county, the biggest jumps recorded from 2007-2009.
The peak came in 2011 where a total of 12,480 were on the live register.
Bray is the area with the largest individual figure of unemployed as noted in October which is at 5,153 while Arklow has 3,148 jobseekers.
Wicklow has a total of 2,182 unemployed while Baltinglass recorded 1,439.
Speaking to The Wicklow People, Cllr Pat Fitzgerald said that the figures 'make for grim reading'.
'Hundreds have gone abroad in the last number of years and but for this fact the unemployment figures would be much greater,'
'I have noted many welcome job announcements throughout the country over the last few years but unfortunately this area is not seeing any green shoots,' he added.
