Darragh Kavanagh gets stuck into to his man-sized' challenge at the Parkview House, Shillelagh. Customers unable to consume the meal in an hour are asked to pay €28 for it.

TELEVISION fans will be familiar with the epic eating challenge programme that is 'Man Vs Food' and now a similar phenomenon has come to South Wicklow.

The restaurant at Parkview House, Shillelagh, run by Melissa Bowes and Eugene Kenny has designed its very own meal challenge and it's not for the faint hearted. While many local foodies have already taken on the 'Parkview House Special King Burger' not everyone has been hungry enough to put it away in the one hour allotted time.

'Basically it's a 32 ounce pure steak burger on a massive bap topped with a choice of three eggs or bacon and cheese with a side of chips and a pint of milk,' explains Melissa.

'If they finish it within an hour it is free and they get a winner's t-shirt but if they are beaten they have to pay €28 for their meal,' she adds.

The challenge has been attracting plenty of attention from the local community including some of the staff at nearby Kerry Foods.

In true Man Vs Food style eager challengers have been bringing a live audience with them for moral support to ensure they give it their best shot.

'We normally advise people to call a day ahead so we can have everything ready and we sit them in the snug. Plenty of them have had an audience cheering them on and plenty of promises of having a pint bought for them if they manage it,' says Melissa.
