After a 15-year hiatus from the Tinahely Show, Murphy's Butchers made an epic comeback this year, picking up the top award for best overall product.
The decision to showcase their own beef and lamb at the popular IFA Food from our Farms tent was a good one according to the proprietor, Damien Murphy.
'We hadn't done the show in so long so we were really looking forward to it and the IFA tent is always a very popular section of the show.
'The last time we took part was 15 years ago before my father Patrick retired,' Damien explained.
Having taken over the family business in 2002, Damien was excited to set up their vast display at the show and even more thrilled to pick up the coveted award.
'We saw the show as a great opportunity to showcase our product and we are in business over 43 years, so it is great to get this sort of recognition.'
The secret to Murphy's success, Damien explained, is the control they have over their product, given that they prepare all the meat themselves on-site.
'We are one of only three butchers in Wicklow to have our own slaughter house so we are in charge of all stages.
'People like to be able to ask their local butcher about the product, to get advice on cooking and preparation.
'That's the benefit of being a local business – providing customer service along with a good quality product.'
