THE transfer of community welfare services from Carnew to Wicklow Town, causing Carnew to lose its social welfare officer as of August 24, has induced bedlam in the local community, according to Cllr Pat Doran.
The community welfare service is now being administered by the Department of Social Protection, having been previously been under the charge of the HSE.
Now, local welfare recipients will have to commute to Wicklow to see their social welfare officer, which Cllr Doran has described as 'a total disaster.'
'We have a lot of elderly people, people on very small wages and people with disability who are receiving welfare,' he said. 'How can they be catered for on the Murrough? I'm a member of the Health Board and I wasn't even informed about it.'
Upon being contacted by the Wicklow People, the Department of Social Protection claimed that the clinic in Carnew was closed as on average it received less than five customers each week.
Sharon Hannon will now serve as social welfare officer for Carnew residents. Her number is 0879156773.
