BRIDES and grooms in Wicklow are more likely to marry a local and leave it later to tie the knot than their counterparts elsewhere in the country, according to information released by the CSO.
The statistics released last week confirmed that the average age of a bride in Wicklow in 2011 was 32.9 (higher than the national average of 32.5) while the average age of a Wicklow groom is 35.5, the national average being 34.6.
Only Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and Waterford City had older brides on average than Wicklow with the same trend ringing true for grooms.
The Wicklow statistics seem to reflect a national trend whereby couples are leaving it till progressively later before getting married. From 1994-2011, the average age of brides and grooms nationwide increased by 4.7 and 4.8 years respectively.
Wicklow also had the third highest percentage of brides from the same area as their groom in the country (90.5%) after Donegal and Waterford City. 87.5% of grooms in Wicklow married someone from the same locality as them.
