Vartry Rowing Club in Wicklow made its debut in the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships held last weekend at Lough Currane, Waterville, Co. Kerry.
Vartry, sponsored by Flogas Ireland, joined forces with Inver Copla Rowing club in Drogheda for the event and entered several crews in the various racing categories held over the three day event.
More than 2,700 rowers competed and raced for medals and trophies in 64 races with crews from Wicklow, Wexford, Louth, Donegal, Antrim, Belfast and Donegal taking part.
Chairperson George O'Brien said, 'It's the biggest regatta of its type in Ireland and the competition was tough and of a very high standard. We didn't take home any medals this year but it was an excellent learning experience for many of our members who had never competed at that level before. Everyone was delighted to have competed at such a prestigious competition and it's spurred many of them on to train even harder for next year's event.'
