A BTAND new outdoor gym was opened in the Parnell Memorial Park in Rathdrum on Friday, July 12.
The gym – which cost a total of €45,000 to construct – will cater to people aged 13 and over and in doing so complement the existing playground built for those aged three to 12. In total, it features 11 pieces of equipment including a stretch station, squat press and cardio steps.
The gym was officially opened by Frank D'Arcy, CEO of Wicklow County Partnership, John Smith, General Manger of MSD Rathdrum, and chairwoman of Rathdrum Senior Citizens Kathleen Kirwan. Fr Brian O'Reilly and Rev Canon John McCullough both blessed the gym.
In his speech to mark the occasion, Pat Kennedy, chairman playground committee, thanked the Rathdrum Development Association for donating the ground for the gym and the people of the town for their support.
'I believe if an idea is born in the community and has the backing of the community it will succeed,' he said. 'Rathdrum can grow and prosper with continued investment in facilities like the playground and gym. If we support each other we can achieve great things in this town.'
