'I had always been a bit chubby but it got worse around the time I was doing my Junior Cert. I got lazy and stopped playing sports,' explained Niamh Carroll who started out at almost 14 stone and is now 9 stone 3.

My weight never bothered me a whole lot, obviously I would've preferred to be skinny, but it wasn't until 2008 that I decided I needed to do something about it.'

Niamh remembers being a concert with her boyfriend at the time. 'I looked around the crowd to see lots of girls sitting on the shoulders of their boyfriends. I realised that doing that wasn't an option for me. That was my moment, when I decided enough was enough and I went online and found my local Weight Watchers class.'

Leader Mary was lovely and everyone was welcoming. Everyone was in the same situation with the same goal.

'I always knew I had a good bit of weight to lose, but it was still a shock to see that number on the scales. Despite that, I came away feeling empowered - I was ready!'

Niamh never ate a lot of junk but struggled with portion sizes so had to make changes to what she was eating.

'I did add in lots of fruit and vegetables and tried to drink plenty of water,' she said.

She also introduced regular exercise until last year Niamh finally reached her goal.

'Losing weight has made a fantastic difference to me; I used to be very uncomfortable showing my bare arms in public; I had a cardigan and shrug in every colour and even if the room was roasting, I would refuse to take that extra layer off. At 28 years old, for the first time ever, I've felt comfortable showing off my arms!

'I've dropped four dress sizes, so I have a lot more choice in what I wear, and most of all I have a lot more confidence - nothing holds me back. My mother and sister came with me for my 'after' photo shoot and it was such a great day; they've been a big support to me.

'My journey to goal weight was long, but it was so rewarding and worthwhile. I'm happier, more confident and have more energy - it's a feeling you can't bottle!'

Weight Watchers meetings take place at the Esplanade Hotel on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., 11.15 a.m., 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.
