Campervan park plans
Wicklow's tourism trade could receive a welcome boost as the Town Council intends to covert a section of The Murrough Car Park into parking bays for camper vans.
The proposal from Cllr. Garrett O'Reilly was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from his fellow elected members of Wicklow Town Council.
The height restriction would be relocated to another part of the carpark and up to 15 parking bays facing the sea front would be made available. The occupants of the camper vans would enter their credit cards into a payment system at the barriers charging them €8 a day, with a maximum stay of 72 hours allowed.
By Cllr. O'Reilly's estimations if the parking bays are used for 35 per cent of the year it could produce over €100,000 in revenue for the town council. He suggested this money could be used to hire another parking attendant who could focus on managing the new camper van bays. He also maintained the venture would have a knock-on effects for local businesses and hostileries.
