Fans set off by bus, train and car for the capital on Sunday to witness what would be Liverpool's first game in Dublin since pre-season in 1998. A wonderful atmosphere ensued, both on the journey up, and on the streets of Dublin beforehand as supporters sang verse after verse of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and 'The Fields of Anfield Road'.
A unique atmosphere was created between both sets of fans, as they mingled on the streets and in the stands of the impressive Aviva Stadium. In the minutes leading up to kick off, Liverpool and Celtic fans performed a stirring version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' in unison as the players took to the field. It was a memorable occasion, with both managers, Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon, hailing from Northern Ireland and it was even more special for Dublin lad Anthony Stokes who took the captain's armband in an under-strength Celtic team.
Fans didn't have to wait long for a goal, as Amido Balde's early strike, following a defensive error from young Andre Wisdom found its way past Simon Mignolet to make its way into the Liverpool net.
Liverpool had a Kolo Toure goal disallowed when the linesman flagged for offside, and despite the stadium announcer hailing it as the equaliser, it didn't stand. Liverpool looked slightly more dangerous following the introduction of Daniel Sturridge who made his first appearance following an injury sustained while playing for England against Ireland earlier this summer. Celtic managed to hold onto their lead however and the game ended in disappointment for the gang who made the trip from Wexford.
Despite the result, the game was played in a wonderful atmosphere and it really whet the appetite for what will be an important season for Brendan Rodgers' men. The Wexford Branch Liverpool Supporters Club do a great job in securing tickets for Wexford-based fans and they are still accepting membership up until August 31.
