Cool Keenan slots home for Wexford Youths just in the nick of time
AIDAN KEENAN'S cool finish three minutes into additional ensured all three points for Wexford Youths from this dramatic Division 1 clash with Salthill Devon at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday night.
Wexford Youths who had lost out to the leaders Athlone Town by a single goal seven days earlier turned in a spirited second half showing where they played all the quality football leaving them to deservedly take the three points in the end.
It was a game where all the football was reserved for the second 45 minutes after a disappointing opening period.
The introduction of Donal Shanley to the homesides midfield led to a huge improvement as he became quite influential as the half progressed giving his side a firm foothold in this sector of the pitch.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock through the opening forty-five minutes, with Salthill having centre-back Evan Preston-Kelly red carded after 20 minutes for a wild tackle.
The nearest one came to seeing the deadlock been broken came in the 31st minute when Danny Fitzpatrick had a header off the bottom of the post which eventually spun out wide leavig the scoreline 0-0 at the break.
The homeside took a deserved 52nd minute lead through a powerful Keenan header from twelve meters, but within seven minutes the visitors were back level through Craig Harding shot through a crowded goalmouth.
Nine minutes from the end the Youths were reduced to ten players when Thomas Croke was red carded following an altercation.
With the game in additional time Keenan got on the end of a Shane Nolan corner kick to volley home the winning goal.
