THERE WAS a good start to racing on Saturday night at both Waterford and Shelbourne Park, with a Co. Wexford across the board double in the first races at both venues.
The John Atkinson (Enniscorthy)-owned ' Leah's Impact' ('Royal Impact-Leah's Lady') scored his tenth race win when taking the A2 in a best of the night 28.81 at Waterford.
'Leah's was not best away but was making nice progress as the leader, 'Clover Soprani', approached the third bend.
Trap four runner 'Hickstead' was also in contention but, as they turned for the judge, ' Leah's had the answers to pull away and score by a length and a half from the latter.
Then shortly after this at Shelbourne, the Graham O'Connor (Enniscorthy)-owned 'Eyeoweuzilch' ('Headbound-Madam Hero') scored a nice win in an A2 also, in a time of 28.96. This was her fourth win and her fastest so far.
Getting out well from trap one, 'Eyeoweuzilch' was chased for a long way by another Enniscorthy runner, 'Rains Max'. However, 'Rains' faded from the last bend and 'Eyeo' went on to score nicely.
Owner Sharon Shinkwin (Piercestown) enjoyed another good win with her dog 'Piercestown Liam' ('Royal Impact-Great Plan') in race three at headquarters when, although running wide, he put in a strong finish to grab the money on the line from 'Leonie's Killahan' to score his eleventh win from 39 starts. Sharon's husband, Ronnie Shinkwin, trains this fellow and more wins look on the cards in the near future.
Back to Waterford and Barntown trainer Nick Turner was on the mark in race five when his own bitch, 'Miss Camelot' ('Royal Impact-Coco Nikita') scored her fifth race win when putting in her usual late run to get up in the closing stages to collar leader 'Express Premier' and take the A5 fifth race in 29.60.
The final of the Archaton Pine/Royal Impact Unraced Stake was the feature race of the night and, despite four runners from Co. Wexford, we could not get the better of local dog 'You Little Tale' who scored from Wexford hopeful 'Archaton Martin' in 29.17.
All eyes were on the fifth race from Shelbourne as Enniscorthy dog 'Kereight King' went off hot favourite for the open 550, but he was in trouble from trap rise with runners crowding him from either side and then taking a knock at the third bend.
He did well to get third spot in the end in this hot contest as derby finalist 'Kilbarry Rover' scored in a fast 29.86.
There was a good win on Thursday night at Shelbourne when the George Roche (Barntown)-owned 'Delcash Tactic' ('Hondo Black-Delcash Sidekick') scored her third straight win at the track when breaking well to record a fast split of 2.01 and racing on to take the semi-final of the Bet With The Tote A3 Stake in 29.33, her sixth career win.
