THERE WAS little surprise at the County Board boxing presentation night, when Olympic boxer Adam Nolan picked up the overall boxer of the year award.
He along with Michael Andrews of St. Aidan's and current County Board president, Billy O'Connor of St. Mary's, were also formally welcomd into Wexford's boxing hall of fame on the night.
Similarly, a presentation was made to the late Billy Kiernan's wife May and family recognising the outstanding contribution which the Enniscorthy man made to boxing throughout his lifetime.
Billy Kiernan was the founding member of the Ballagh Boxing Club.
The Jackie Pettitt Memorial Cup went to Jim O'Sullivan who was named Boxer of the Decade.
There was also a series of prizes awarded in the underage categories to those who performed exceptionally well during last year's season.
Meanwhile, representing the ladies was Nicole Moorehouse of Sacre Coeur Boxing Club in Enniscorthy. She was awarded the prize for best female boxer.
Liam Walsh of Wexford's County Board said that the occasion was a terrific night for the county's boxing clubs.
The prize giving ceremony formally marked the end of last year's season and all of the clubs are preparing to go back to training in the coming weeks.
Liam noted that following on from the success of Team Ireland in boxing at the recent Olympics, there has been a surge in the level of interest, which he reckons should bode well for the future of the sport in the Model County.
