Follow in Katie's footsteps

HAVE YOU got what it takes to be the next Katie Taylor? That is the question on the lips of the coaching team at Clonard Boxing Club, who hope that young women will be inspired by the recent Olympics to take up the sport.

The tide is turning, according to chairman Francis Keeling, and women are choosing to take up the sport, which was traditionally dominated by men.

'There are great opportunities for women who are interested in the sport,' he said.

He reckons that the main difficulty faced by boxing clubs in recruiting female members is the popular misconceptions which surround the safety of the sport.

'We take safety very seriously,' he said.
