Athlone will be buzzing with Wexford finalists

WEXFORD CHILDREN are preparing to make their way to Athlone I.T. this coming weekend for the national Community Games finals which will be held on Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday.

This will be a very busy occasion for all as we have so many events taking place at the same time. To all who are going to Athlone to compete, we wish them the very best of luck and hope they bring back some medals to their respective Areas and county.

PROJECTS: The Clonroche-Poulpeasty team of Niamh Ogilvie, Rebecca Ogilvie, Caitlin Blackburn and Katie Foley will compete in the Under-11 category. The Newbawn-Raheen Area has Maria Kavanagh, Eimear Mernagh, Tara Doyle and Julie Furlong (Under-13) and Oonagh Murphy, Rachel Buckley, Caoimhe Doyle and Róisín Stephenson (Under-16) competing for them.

GYMNASTICS: All of our gymnasts are from the Gorey Area and good luck to Rúairí Martin, Jamie Doyle, Aalayiah Water, Robyn Cousins, Beth McKillen and Ciara Byrne in their quest for success.

MODEL-MAKING: Dean Gibney-Elliot (Ballycanew), Neil Foley, Aisling Flood (Clonroche-Poulpeasty), Pat Doyle, Aine Doyle, Anna Kenny and Rita Doyle (Craanford) make up the competitors in the various age groups.

CROSS-COUNTRY: We have a boys' Under-14 team of Joseph Hanlon, James Hanlon, Aran Murphy (Ring of Hook), Adam Sinnott and Aaron Hanley from Taghmon competing for us, while the girls' Under-14 relay team is comprised of Annalise Crean (Bree-Davidstown), Aoife Muldoon, Tara Hudson, Siobhán Hudson (Clonroche-Poulpeasty), Rebecca Bawden (Ring of Hook) and Rebecca Banville from Taghmon.

DEBATING: This is a new competiton to the calendar of events with Bree-Davidstown having the honour of being our first competitors at the national finals. The team features Peter Kelly, Oscar Hayre, Sarah Byrne and Rachel Long.

HANDWRITING: Eoghan Carroll (Craanford) and Hermione Murphy from the Kilrush-Askamore Area will compete. This is a first time for the Kilrush-Askamore Area to compete in the national finals and we hope Hermione will enjoy the experience.

ART: Niamh Fortune, Gráinne Bates, Ana Bates, Daniel Kirwan, Cian Bates (Kilmore), Lasairiona Stafford (Adamstown), Niamh Murphy, Kevin Murphy (Clonroche-Poulpeasty), Alex Kelly (Craanford) and Jack Smyth from the Glynn-Barntown Area will be in action.

TABLE QUIZ: Castlebridge-Crossabeg are in action and their team members are Uilliam Kinsella, Caoilfhinn Kinsella, Fionn Griffin, Niall Reck and Nora Moran.

TEAM EVENTS: Two teams are through to the national finals. The Taghmon girls' badminton team of Clodagh Dempsey, Clodagh Dunne, Elsa Dunlop-Doyle, Rachel Murray and Jessie Doyle will compete while Kilmore are sending up an Under-13 indoor girls' soccer team featuring Emily Bates, Mollie Bates, Imogen Fanning, Grace Barry, Megan Doyle, Sophie Boxwell, Kira Bates-Crosbie and Anna Bates.

SWIMMING: The competitors in the girls' individual events are Abi Cullen, Holly Furlong, Alannah Malone (Bree-Davidstown), Danielle Colfer, Jessica Sutton (Rathgarogue-Cushinstown), Matilda Dunne-Cronin (Ferns), Holly Gibbon, Ailbhe McCormick (Clongeen) and Aoife Milne and Deirbhile Cruise from the Gorey Area.

Individual swimmers in the boys' section include Doran O'Toole (Gorey), Gary Porter, Ben Sutton (Rathgarogue-Cushinstown), Jack Nolan-Whitney (Enniscorthy), Darragh Sinnott (Piercestown-Murrintown), Dillon Cousins (Glynn-Barntown), Tadhg Malone and Barry Nolan (Bree-Davidstown), and Niall Reck from Castlebridge-Crossabeg.

The Bree-Davidstown Area have a girls' Under-16 squad in action featuring Alannah Malone, Ciara Byrne, Caoimhe Byrne and Sarah Byrne. The Gorey Area have a girls' Under-13 squad competing and they will be represented by Muireann Fitzpatrick, Aoife Milne, Derbhile Cruise and Kate Millar.

Meanwhile, for those of you who like to sit down and listen to some great music, good singing and watch dancers in action, then there is plenty to keep you occupied at the finals too.

By now all of the outdoor team events have been finalised and relevant panel forms and birth certs. forwarded to Leinster. To those who will be competing at Leinster level the first rounds (against Kilkenny) must be played between Monday, June 3, and Monday, June 10.

Second round matches are to be played between Monday, June 17, and Monday, June 24. Wexford are away to Kilkenny in round one with the winners travelling to play Carlow in round two. The Leinster semi-finals and finals will be played in Co. Longford on Saturday, July 6.

A reminder that once a match is played all signed team sheets must be forwarded (by the winning team) to Rita Timmons, 165, Moorefield Park, Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

Any Area wishing to hold the county athletic finals should contact the county Secretary as soon as possible. The dates in mind are Saturday, June 22, or Saturday, June 29.

The next county meeting will be held in Mernagh's Lounge, Oylegate, on Thursday, May 30, at 8.30 p.m. Areas are reminded that they must have at least one delegate present. Please note the change of venue.
