What a huge week in the 2014 season for Racing795 club! Billy Barry takes pride of place having conquered Iron-man Australia in style with a magnificent performance.

Bill completed the entire course in eleven hours, 45 minutes with a 65-minute swim, six hours 18 minutes bike (180 km.), and four hours 15 minutes run (full marathon). Well done Bill.

Club members were out in force in the 2014 Blackstairs Adventure race which involves a combination of mountain running, cycling and kayaking. Lining out for the seven steps were Mike Ryan, Barry Byrne, Alan Tully, Mat Seebach and David Tully, with Deirdre Byrne doing the five steps. In very tough conditions all completed the course in fine style, with Mike Ryan bagging another podium place with a excellent third place.

On the cycling road racing front, John Dempsey and Patsy McCaffery were in action in the Frank O'Rouke A3/A4 race recently. Patsy finished in an excellent eleventh position in the A3 race with John putting in a fine ride to complete his first A4 race.

Finally, on the running road racing scene, Racing795 were out in force in the Slade Valley four-miler in Ardattin and Brian O'Shaughnessy represented the club in the Wexford County Masters six km. road race.

ENNISCORTHY HOCKEY

Enniscorthy Hockey Club celebrated on the double last week at the culmination of a successful season. A historic first season of men's hockey was capped with the capture of the Leinster Division 8 title, with the Des Medcalf Memorial Perpetual Cup presented to captain Kieran Costello by grandson of Des and club member, Daithí Medcalf.

At the team awards night manager Fraser Rothwell made presentations to a number of his players. Netminder Graham Hill received the 'goalkeeper of the year' accolade for a string of clean sheets, while at the opposite end of the pitch Niall Maguire was rewarded for his goalscoring prowess.

Glenn Chapman won the 'player of the year' award after a season of outstanding performances in midfield, and Seamus McAllister was rated as 'most improved'. For what would prove to be the goal that eliminated cup holders Corinthians IV, Clive Rothwell got the nod for 'magic moment'. The 2014-'15 season will see the team compete in Division 7.

Not to be outdone, six of Enniscorthy's Under-16 boys captured a trophy as part of the Leinster Lions squad for smaller clubs. Taking part in the Joey O'Meara Cup tournament at Railway Union Hockey Club, the Lions defeated Three Rock Rovers, Avoca, and drew with the hosts, to set up a semi-final with Dublin 4 side Pembroke Wanderers.

The outsiders came through on the right side of a 4-0 scoreline, and took on Y.M.C.A. in the final. A tense match finished 2-2 in normal time, meaning a one v. one shoot-out to decide the winner. Enniscorthy's John Casey was the hero for the Lions, making a near-impossible save to secure victory.

With strong numbers progressing through the under-age ranks, Enniscorthy may soon be able to field its own teams at all levels, and as the production line develops a stream of talented players, future success for the club seems assured.

Well done to all the Juveniles who competed in the county track and field championships. Everybody put in fantastic performances.

In New Ross, Ryan Boland won silver in the turbo javelin and Michael Sullivan took bronze in the 1,500 metres. Last Sunday in Kilmore, Naoise Byrne won gold in the turbo javelin and Leanne Boland won bronze in the javelin. Next up for the Juveniles is the county 'B' championship which takes place on Friday, June 27, in Adamstown.

On Friday last in Enniscorthy some of our Senior athletes competed in the county Masters road race. Congratulations to our women's team - Mary Kennedy, Ciara Jones and Majella Boland - who put in great performances over the 4k route.

The men also put in solid performances, having to tackle three laps of the two-kilometre loop - Pat Foley, Derek Malone, Brian Maher, Mark McGrath, Liam Donovan and Michael Byrne. Thanks to all the supporters who came along to cheer on all the athletes.

Well done to Michael Byrne who competed in the I.M.R.A. Summer League on Scalp on Wednesday last. This week's leg takes place at Djouce so good luck to those tackling the hills.

S.B.R. A.C.

Well done to the seven S.B.R. athletes who competed in the Leinster Novice road race championships in Gowran, Co. Kilkenny, on May bank holiday Monday. All members ran well, but the club was very unlucky to just miss out on medals as S.B.R. placed fourth club overall, just falling an agonising one point short of third team Sportsworld from Dublin.

Paul Lynch, Myles Gibbons, Denis Moynihan, Noel Kennedy, David Leonard, Stephen Tyrrell and Joe Lillis were the members who competed in the six km. race and they also formed the Wexford team which placed fourth also in the inter-county competition.

S.B.R. had a very successful evening at the County Wexford Masters road race championships in Enniscorthy on Friday last. Slaney Olympic A.C. did a great job hosting the races on the old Dublin road, with the ladies competing over four km. and the men over six km.

The ladies' team was just out of the medals, with Mary Doyle, Lillian Lawless and Marie Cullen all running well, but Lillian was an individual medal winner, as she took gold in the Over-45 category which was great going.

In the men's, S.B.R. won both gold and bronze medals in the team event, with Myles Gibbons, Paul Lynch and Tommy McElwaine scoring for the first team and Paul Gibbons, Ger Doyle and Bernard Fortune scoring for the second team.

Myles won individual silver, with Paul Lynch taking individual bronze. In the age categories, S.B.R. were very successful with gold for Tommy McElwaine (Over-45), Eugene Doherty (Over-55) and Tom Kavanagh (Over-65). Well done to everyone who fielded out for the club.

Joe Lillis and Patrick Curley took on the mammoth challenge of the 'seven steps' of the Blackstairs adventure race on the Sunday of the May bank holiday weekend, a race which involved seven sections - run, cycle, kayak, cycle, run, cycle, run. Both completed the challenge in less than four hours, with Joe placing second overall and Patrick sixth, great going guys.

Well done to Liam Bowe who was in action in the Carers' Association ten km. road race that took place in Kilkenny city on May bank holiday Monday, finishing fifth overall in a time of 41.06.

Well done to David Leonard who was in Dublin on Sunday last to compete in the Tom Byrne memorial five km. road race that was organised by Lucan Harriers A.C., clocking a time of 18.06.

This coming Sunday will see the second running of the Mogue O'Neill Memorial ten km. road race in Kilrush. The race will get under way at 1 p.m. and registration can be made on http:www.runireland.com or there is limited entry on the day. Refreshments will be served after the run, with prizes for the race and spot prizes also being presented.
