SOUTH EAST ALLIANCE
On Sunday, December 29, a hard frost covered the country but not in Bunclody where play in the South East Alliance started at 8.30 a.m. The players were treated to testing conditions on a good, dry golf course.
The outstanding player was Eddie Power of Kilkenny Golf Club, a Tramore native, and probably Waterford's most famous golfer. Having covered the first nine in two under par 35, he made a spectacular finish to birdie the 16th and 18th for a 69 and three under par. Michael Buggy (Castlecomer), playing off +1, won first gross with a 73. This event caters for professionals and category one amateurs in the south-east.
Results: first nett, Eddie Power (Kilkenny, scr.), 69; first gross, Michael Buggy (Castlecomer, +1), 73; second nett, Alan O'Rourke (Kilkenny, 4), 72; second gross, Grahm Nugent (Kilkenny, 1), 72.
The next round is in Kilkenny on Sunday next, January 12.
The New Year's Day nine-hole competition fell foul of the bad weather.
The weekend singles stableford saw a reduced field due to bad frost on Saturday and miserable wet and windy conditions on Sunday. Peter Brolly (18), playing on Saturday, had the winning score of 40 points.
Peter Byrne (25) also played on Saturday and, helped by a very rare eagle on the 13th hole, took second prize with 39 points. Andrew Byrne (18) played in the worst of the weather on Sunday and took third spot with 38 points.
There was a big attendance at the A.G.M. of Rosslare Golf Club held in the clubhouse recently. The President, Terry Fortune, chaired the meeting.
The following officers and committee were elected: President, Dan Cash; Captain, John Galvin; Vice-Captain, Paud O'Brien; lady Captain, Bernadette Cuddihy; lady Vice-Captain, Joan Wallace; Hon. With the festive season behind us we look forward to the 2014 golfing season. On a wet and windy New Year's Day it was great to see so many members and friends in Rosslare Golf Club for the Captains' drive-in to welcome our 2014 Captains, John Galvin and Bernadette Cuddihy and also our Junior Captains, Robert Coakley and Róisín Callaghan.
We wish John and Bernadette all the best in the coming year. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions on the day, the competition was called off.

This was the first competition of 2014 and following the Christmas break there were a lot of 'rusty' swings! The weather was lovely and although soft underfoot the course was playing well.
A total of 58 players enjoyed a great start to the golfing year in St. Helen's Bay. Well done to Pat and Janet on their individual wins and also to Pat Murphy who returned the only two.
With only a 27-point difference between the leaders Pebble Beach and the trailing team Medinah, there's all to play for in the remaining four qualifying rounds after which the top six teams qualify for the play-off stages.

Happy new year to all members of New Ross Golf Club and to all our sponsors, visitors and friends. 2014 promises to be an exciting year, with the prospect of a Pro-Am taking place in May and the introduction of a number of different membership categories which should attract further new blood into the club.
The date for the Pro-Am has been fixed as Friday, May 16. It is the first time that a Pro-Am has been held in New Ross and it is a very exciting prospect for the members. The event will form part of the P.G.A. Order of Merit, and will attract many of the country's leading professionals. There will be plenty of more information released over the coming weeks and months, but in the meantime if you have any queries please contact James Roche or Paul Morris in the Pro Shop.
There are two new categories of membership on offer at New Ross Golf Club in 2014. New members, including former members returning after an absence of two or more years, will be able to avail of 'lead in' membership. 'Lead in' membership costs a total of €454 for men and €463 for women and includes €75 of bar or restaurant credit.
An Under-30s membership category has also been introduced. The total cost for this membership is just €365 for the year, inclusive of all levies. For more information on joining, please contact Kathleen Daly in the office on 051-421433, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the website: www.newrossgolfclub.ie.
The Christmas classic is still ongoing, though the inclement weather over the holiday period failed to put off over 120 teams or so that have taken part so far. Credit too to the course staff, as the course has been open throughout the period and is still in great condition.
Next weekend (Saturday and Sunday, January 11 and 12), a 14-hole singles stableford competition takes place. The top three will win a place in the Pro-Am in May. Tee-times can be booked online as normal.
There have been two 'Find The Joker' winners over Christmas and new year. First up was Dick Dowling who opened envelope 28 to find the 2 of Hearts. James Roche was the winner on Sunday last, unveiling the 8 of Hearts in envelope 31. Dick and James scoop €30 for their efforts and the jackpot rolls on to €1,113. Entries cost €2 and are taken in the bar. The next draw will take place on Sunday next.
NEW ROSS LADIES
To get us all out on the course again, the lady Captain has devised a winter league.
The format consists of teams of four. There will be a draw for teams on Friday, January 17.
Names must be entered on the 'players' list' before this date so that teams can be drawn.
An entry fee €5 is required (to be paid before play commences). Mark the envelope 'winter league'.
There will be three rounds played over 14 holes stableford with the best three out of four team members' scores recorded for their team.
Each round will be played over a two-week period. Rules and dates allocated are posted on the noticeboard.
