Adamstown spoil Starlights' return
ADAMSTOWN FIRED the final five points against 14-man Starlights to claim an opening round Group B win in the Tom Doyle Supplies Senior football championship at O'Kennedy Park, New Ross, on Saturday last.
The New Ross District side's chances were aided by the 13th-minute sending-off of Starlights full-back Anthony Russell, with the former Wexford Youths defender seeing red for two yellow cards in 90 seconds.
Starlights were looking to make the most of a helping breeze in the first period but fell behind when Paudie Barden converted a dead ball after being fouled.
Brendan Kearney laid off for Pa Doyle to level moments later before flame-haired Chris Kenny sent over a booming effort to put the Enniscorthy town club ahead.
A bursting David McEvoy run saw Russell reach out and haul him down, leaving referee Eric Molloy with no option but to reach for the yellow card followed by the red.
Barden converted the free to tie the game again (0-2 each), but Starlights showed the first signs that they wouldn't lie down with Kenny pointing for the second time.
The sides continued to trade scores and were level at 0-4 apiece after James Breen and Mervyn Moloney registered for Adamstown and a John Hudson over arrived for Starlights. However, the game turned on its head with four minutes of the first-half remaining as Hudson intercepted an awful pass in the Adamstown full-back line and raced away to goal low to the 'keeper's right.
Barden clipped over an important settling point before the interval (1-4 to 0-5) to leave Adamstown two behind, but Hudson claimed his second point within two minutes of the re-start.
Starlights were defending well but they couldn't prevent David McEvoy pointing after a period of sustained pressure inside the Intermediate champions' half of the field.
Lee Murphy saved well from Ian Stafford to prevent Adamstown edging ahead, but they did move within one with 16 minutes remaining when Barden floated his fourth after good work by James Breen.
Almost immediately Adamstown drew level (1-5 to 0-8) when McEvoy started a move that involved Tomás Harrington and Moloney, and that gave them the impetus to go ahead for the first time since the third minute as Conor Hickey converted a long-range free with eleven minutes remaining.
Barden's third free, and fifth point in all, gave his side a little added security and, despite some late Starlights pressure, Adamstown held on to claim victory.
