Wexford Labour councillor and secondary school teacher Joe Ryan has defended sending a tweet in which he told one of his Leaving Cert students that he should be more worried about the cost of repeating the exams than water charges.
Keith Harpur, a Leaving Cert student in the CBS secondary school, said he was 'horrified' by the remark made by Cllr. Ryan, who teaches him resource Biology.
The 18-year-old student told how his friends were messing and created a mock poster, as if he were running in the elections himself.
He went along with it and tweeted his teacher a message saying 'I want to abolish this water charge that Cllr. Ryan and his party put in place.'
Cllr. Ryan replied with: 'I'd be more worried about the charge to repeat the L.C. if I were you.'
The CBS student said he thought the remark was 'highly unprofessional' of his science teacher.
However, Cllr. Ryan said he felt entitled, 'even obligated', as a teacher to point out to him that he should be keeping his mind on the Leaving Cert.
Cllr. Ryan said the tweet was sent to him in a political context and he received it at 11 or 12 o'clock at night.
'Given the time of year, I think it was appropriate to respond in the way I did,' said the father of five, who himself has a son sitting the Leaving Cert this year.
