KEY representatives from the travel and freight industry joined officials from Stena Line at the official opening of their recently acquired Rosslare-Cherbourg ferry service on board the newly-renamed Stena Horizon cruise ferry.
The new Stena Line route operates an all-year-round service with three weekly sailings from Rosslare and Cherbourg accommodating up to 1,000 passengers, 200 cars and 120 freight units per sailing.
Ian Davies, Stena Line's route manager (Irish Sea South), said that since Stena acquired the route from the Wexford-based Celtic Link in March, 'a lot of hard work has gone into integrating the Rosslare-Cherbourg service into the Stena Line brand of operational standards and industry leading customer service'.
'I'm delighted to say that in a relatively short period of time we have managed to make the transition and are now in a position to officially launch our new service,' he said on board the Stena Horizon berthed at Rosslare Europort.
'Having a direct connection between Ireland and the Continent is a strategically important milestone for Stena Line on the Irish Sea.
'We have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from the travel and freight industries since we announced our purchase of the route. Already we have seen encouraging growth in travel and freight volumes which I believe pays testimony to Stena Line's track record of continuous development as one of the leading ferry companies in the world,' he said.
'Against a backdrop of an improving economic climate in Ireland and the Continent, we believe our new service will go from strength to strength and we are pleased that we have been able to secure the long term future of this important commercial and cultural link between both regions.'
