ALL PARISHES in the Diocese of Ferns are being asked to give generously for a special Trocaire collection for war weary Syria, starting on Sunday, November 17.
'The parishes are invited to take up an extra collection to assist those who are so adversely effected by violence and displacement, in this war torn region,' said Fr John Carroll, the Diocesan Representative to Trocaire.
'Trocaire is currently engaged in relief work that is getting food, water, clothing, shelter, medical and psycho social supports to 255,855 refugees in Syria,' said Fr, Caroll.
Fr. Carroll acknowledged that the current economic climate is challenging for everybody but he pointed to the acute circumstances if this war torn area.
'At present 120,000 people have died in Syria and a staggering 5.8 million have been forced from their homes,' he continued.
'This conflict' he concluded 'is one of biblical proportion and support for the work of Trocaire - through partners in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey since March 2012 - is vital.'
Parishes are invited to support this appeal through the organisation of a second or retiring collection on the weekend of November 17.
Funds collected are to be returned to Bishop's House for forwarding to Trocaire Head Office.
