AN MCD-PROMOTED major music festival is likely to alight on Wexford town in September as the Cois Fharraige festival relocates.
The waste ground on the Ardcavan side of Wexford bridge has been earmarked to host the three day music festival in September, and will attract upwards of 6,500 visitors to the town.
Music promotions company, MCD have applied to Wexford County Council for a licence to hold the event over three days from September 9 to September 11.
The Cois Fharraige Festival has previously been held in Kilkee, Co. Clare and have attracted acts like The Coronas, Supergrass, The Saw Doctors, Repubic of Loose and the Blizzards in the past. The surf festival did not go ahead in Clare last year, and promoters MCD are now seeking to relocate it to Wexford.
The Festival is aimed at promoting surfing and water sports during the day, with concerts featuring major headline artists held under canvass at night time.
According to one of the local organisers of the event, while the festival has not been '100 per cent secured' for Wexford, he is 90 per cent sure that it will go ahead' this year.
Previous Cois Fharraige Festivals in Clare have attracted 8000 people to Kilkee and generated up to €6m for the local economy.
'We would hope to attract some major league, serious acts,' said a local spokesman who said that the site for the festival had been examined and approved by organisers of the Oxegen festival.
'If this goes ahead it will be fantastic for Wexford,' he said, adding that unlike other festivals, this will have a sporty, outdoors theme during the day with all of the music under canvas at night times.
' This is not a typical Fesival, but it will be a major event which we would hope would attract a lot of people to Wexford,' he said.
When contacted this week MCD Promotions would not comment on any potential festival announcement for Wexford.
However a public notice for a licence to hold the event was published in a national newspaper last Wednesday.
Any observations can be made to Wexford County Council about the event in the next month.
