MORE than 200 people turned out for the re-opening of storm-damaged Kiltra Bridge near Carrig-on-Bannow at the weekend.

The bridge and part of the approach roads were badly damaged during storms in February, forcing locals to take detours since then.

A private contractor working for the county council repaired the bridge over the past five weeks with local engineer Martin Fellowes in charge of the project.

To mark the re-opening, the local community held a barbeque and tradional music session alongside the bridge, which was officially opened by the youngest member of the community, two-year-old Gregory Neville.

Ann Farrell, from Bannow Historical Society, spoke on the bridge's history and its importance to the local community.

The bridge was blessed by Fr. Jim Keogh and Fr. Denis Browne.
