Concern about increase in number of homeless

Homelessness is one of the biggest issues facing Wexford County Council, according to Cllr Robbie Ireton.
He was concerned that a growing number of people are sleeping in the open. Where homeless people are identified, the Ozanam House hostel in Wexford is usually too full to provide a bed, complained the Labour man.
He complained that money is being spent on sending those without a roof over their heads to stay in hotels.
He wanted hostels provided as an alternative not only in Wexford but also in Gorey, Enniscorthy and New Ross.
'If we do not develop hostels ourselves, there are plenty of builders who would,' commented Robbie Ireton. 'If we had hostels in each of the main towns, it would make a massive difference - for short term stays only.'
He was aware of one case where a woman spent two months staying in a hotel with her two children.
He was supported by Cllr Davy Hynes: 'Things have never been as bad.'
