TIERNAN Fogarty, the 16-year-old Wexford schoolboy who received a life-giving bone marrow transplant in the UK shortly before Christmas, is due home later this week.

'He's coming home two months ahead of schedule. He's ready for living now,' said his aunt, Fionola Mullen.

'It shows how much of a fighter he is.

'He's in great form,' she said.

The St. Peter's College student, who will turn 17 in April, received his older brother's bone marrow in long operation at Newcastle Hospital last December.

Following the operation, he spent weeks in isolation at the Bubble Unit at Newcastle Hospital to make sure he did not contract an infection.

Tiernan is a member of Wexford Golf Club and just before the transplant received a text from Graham McDowell, Rory McIlroy and even Tiger Woods, wishing him best of luck with everything.

Fionola said that after he arrives home, it will be some time before Tiernan is allowed back on the golf course. He plans on a return to St. Peter's in September.

'He's allowed back in the open though and you'll see him on the putting green,' she said.

Fionola said the family wanted to say a big thank you to Professor Andrew Cant and all at the Bubble Unit and to the Holiday Inn Express which had facilitated frequent visits.

Tiernan's 19-year-old brother Eoghan was the bone marrow donor for the 16-year-old who had a rare genetic disorder which attacked his immune system.

The family said it had heartened by the response of the people of Wexford and surrounding villages to a series of fundraising events to help cover the cost of family members travelling to Newcastle and remaining with the youngster in the build up to and following his operation.

Tiarnan, from the New Line Road, is a son of Lorraine and Eamon and is a grandson of Tim and Maureen Fogarty and Jimmy Dowdall of Bishopswater.
