A century-old tradition was kept enthusiastically alive at the weekend as the Blackwater Eucharistic procession went through the village - just as it has every summer for the past 100 years without a break.
Bishop Denis Brennan arrived to join parishioners celebrate the centenary. He carried the precious Host through the village under a canopy carried by four men.
Blackwater was looking at its best for the occasion after many premises were given a recent lick of paint. Local groups including scouts and GAA teams were among those who fell into step for the parade en route from the church to the grotto. Pride of place was given to the girls and boys who recently took their first holy communion.
The Wexford Confraternity Band set the pace and parish priest Father Hugh O'Byrne led the reciting of the holy rosary during the hour-long ceremony.
