'Hakuna Matata', a motorcyle club based in Kilmuckridge, with members around the country, cruised for 260 km through counties Wicklow, Kilkenny and Carlow before finishing up in Wexford.

The bikers usually meet every Saturday for breakfast and a mystery tour ride.

Recently they decided they would like to do some charity ride-outs and chose Wexford MarineWatch as the recipient of their first ever event.

Club members had heard about the organisation's efforts to prevent incidents of suicide on Wexford Bridge and were impressed by the work.

On arrival in Wexford, they were met by a welcoming committee of MarineWatch volunteers, friends, family and members of the public.

The celebrations continued later that evening in Sean Og's pub in Kilmuckridge.

The amount raised will be announced when all the sums have been totted up.

Wexford MarineWatch was delighted with the gesture, according to co-ordinator Frank Flanagan.

He said the voluntary organisation which carries out patrols on the bridge and quayfront, still needs major funding to buy more safety equipment for its volunteers.

In the first four months of monitoring, volunteers have intervened in over 20 incidents in which the safety of individuals was at risk in the harbour area, including the direct prevention of four people from entering the water.

To encourage more volunteers to join, MarineWatch recently introduced an 'interested candidate' scheme where by a person can go on patrol with experienced volunteers to see the workat first hand.

There is no obligation on them to join afterwards.
