All weather at Mercy
A NEW all-weather playing area and sports track is being built at the Mercy School John's Road.
The school's board of management said in a statement that disruption will be kept to a minumum and it will be well worth it in the end.
The all-weather artificial grass area will be suitable for all types of games and sports during and after school.
Once built, it will mean that children will have a large extra area for playing and games that can be used all year around, even when the natural grass areas are too wet.
The area will be perfect for many of the extra curricular activities that currently take place during and after school such as camogie, hurling, gaelic football, rounders, soccer, athletics and tag-rugby. As well as that it will be ideal for use for our annual sports-day.
The walking track will be situated around the perimeter of the whole green area at the back of the school.
'From now on children will have a unique space for exercising and socialising at break-times(often at the same time). It can also be used as a training track for sports and an exercise area for PE classes. The surface will be suitable for use throughout the year. It may also be possible to eventually use it as a cycling track,' the board said.
'Obviously this is a major project for our school and it will be a huge asset for all children in the school when completed in approximately six weeks. The cost of the project will be covered by the Board of Management and the Parents' Council, with some more fundraising required during the coming year.'
It said that the construction phase there will be some disruption to the school playground and car-park, but it will be kept to a minimum. 'Any short-term inconvenience will be well worth it when the project is finished.'
'We ask all families dropping and collecting children from school to obey any signs and directions that may be temporarily in place during construction.;
The board asked parents to speak to their children about the importance of entering and leaving the school safely at all times, not just during this construction work.
