Accused found guilty of littering after rubbish dumped in Bree

LITTER fines totalling €1,000 were imposed on Tanya O'Brien of Hawthorn Cottage, Sparrowsland, Bree after rubbish was found at two sites in Bree. She was prosecuted on the double by Wexford County Council for offences that came to light last year.

Witness Tim Phelan told how he discovered bags and boxes of rubbish in a clearing in the woods at Craane on March 8, 2012. A fine issued to Tanya O'Brien in the post was not paid, so the matter went to court.

Billy Byrne of the council's 'rapid response team' told Judge John Lindsay how he inspected the scene at Tomfarney a few weeks earlier on February 29. The team was called in to remove litter scattered along the roadside and evidence pointing to the defendant was retained.

Two fines of €500 each came with a bill for €320 costs and €100 in witness expenses.

Ms. O'Brien did not attend the court sitting in Gorey.
