MORE than 1,000 privately rented homes in County Wexford that were inspected last year were below the basic minimum requirements set by the government.
Department of Environment statistics say that 1,363 privately rented homes in the county were inspected in 2013 and 1,003 of them failed to meet what was required.
The minimum standards are that properties should be free from damp and rot, should have a fixed bath or shower, with hot and cold running water, have a working heat source and cooker and a washing machine.
Local authorities are responsible for enforcing the regulations and for carrying out inspections.
